WHEN YOU SWITCH TO VOIP PHONE SERVICE?

ATA is Analog Telephone Adapter so you can use your regualr house phone for voip. Check out Grandstream ATA’s or Linksys. They’re very good.

You need the router component that receives an ethernet line and has a phone jack input. I just use that phone jack for my cordless phones, but you just inspired me to plug a phone line from the router into a wall jack to see if I can connect a phone to the internal house jacks through it.
Basically your phone service is carried through the modem/ethernet wiring so if that’s not connected to your house wiring, then those lines are dead unless you have stand alone DSL – which I have – then it’s only active for DSL, which is why I’m not sure about running a phone line back into those jacks.

Yes, as others have already said. You can use your existing phones. The device you are describing(an ATA) is needed to turn the digital signal into an analogue one so that your normal phones can be used. It also holds an IP address that maps to your phone number so that calls are routed to it.
It comes with an ethernet port to connect to your router and a telephone jack point.
You may have to rent their EMTA(ATA) if you go with Comcast. Sounds like a bad idea.
Vonage provides a free ATA but a locked service meaning that the box comes pre configured and cannot be used for anything other than Vonage. Not great but better.
Others are SIP based so you buy your own ATA and configure it to use whichever service you wish. This is ideal as you can really shop around for the cheapest service but set up is fiddly.
Whichever way you go, there is one more thing you need to do and that is to bridge between the ATA and your home wiring. Best is to place the ATA near your network interface (the place where the landline phone company’s wiring now comes into your house), unplug the house side from the network interface and plug it into the ATA instead.

There are certain requirements that have to be done before you can utilize the VoIP service.
1 -Broadband internet access
2- VoIP adapter
3- Router
4- VoIP provider

You can use your phones and wiring, but you will need a “terminal” which will bridge your phone network with the cable network. It will probably have to be a device from them.
