Many telecommunications companies are looking at the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) which will merge Internet technologies with the mobile world, using a pure VoIP infrastructure. It will enable them to upgrade their existing systems while embracing Internet technologies such as the Web, email, instant messaging, presence, and video conferencing. It will also allow existing VoIP systems to interface with the conventional PSTN and mobile phone networks.

VoIP service providers rent access through the PSTN landline switching centers. When you place a call over the Internet to a destination that has a phone number, the VoIP service provider has a VoIP gateway at the PSTN centers in the area code of the numbers you call. The VoIP gateway connects the Internet connection to the PSTN network in the area of your call Termination. This is why calling to landlines is not generally free from VoIP – because the VoIP provider has to pay for the PSTN network access and then pass the cost on to us. When free calls are provided, it is generally only for promotional periods. Inevitabley they will have to charge for the landline call terminations. That is how Skype started out. It was free in the beginning…. but not any more.

lol.
the PSTN is the public switched telephone network. In other words, its the phone network and infrastructure we use to make phone calls and use access the internet. DSL uses the PSTN.
Im guessing you use VOIP via ADSL over the PSTN line?
so unless your on Wireless, satellite, or have some fancy WAN connection like big business do…you will be using the PSTN to access the internet.
We can use WAN options like VPN to create a secure tunnel via the internet. We can also use the PSTN for dialup services.
Advantages of using the internet for WAN options is its availability and its low cost.
Disadvantages would be its limited speed, conneciton integrity, and security factors…
And thats all i could be bothered typing right now. my advise would be to look up the Cisco pages and see what you can find. GL

When you use a cell phone or a land line phone, your call travels through the phone company networks which is called the PSTN. The advantage is this network is for phones only. The PSTN is very secure and reliable. Disadvantage would be it’s much more costly than VoIP networks.
The PSTN is not used by VoIP unless you are calling a landline or cell phone. In that case, a VoIP call has to be transmitted over the PSTN to reach the number you are calling. The PSTN is not used (normally) when making free calls from a PC using VoIP.
