Your best bet is to buy (or *ahem* obtain) a copy of Boson Netsim, which is a Cisco-device simulator (e.g. routers, switches). You can play around with all the commands, create internetworks, see how routing really works etc.
Another necessity is the reading materials – I recommends Sybex CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) 640-802 book (succinct and cheaper than the Cisco Press editions). Alternatively, you could invest in some video materials which may be a little bit easier to follow. Just be sure that you are getting 640-802 exam books because these cover topics not covered in older editions (E.g. wireless security and IPv6)
CCNA is not that difficult if you have the desire. If you plug away and do a few hours a day and several more on the weekend you could be looking at taking your exam within a month or two. The best way to get your certification is to book an exam a few months away and work backwards from that date (this will give you a deadline to work towards).
E.g.
One day learn about TCP and UDP
Next day learn about the Cisco IOS interface (Cisco’s proprietry operating system) and some basic commands.
EDIT: So yes you can study for CCNA on your own
Hope that helped
