As expensive a business like Skype is to run, using VoIP services are amazingly cheap when compared to a normal telecom provider who runs over POTS (normal telephone system).
The part I assume you use is to contact your friend via computers. This part really doesn’t cost much and it isn’t hard to code a simple program to do the same. Skype get their money from partenering/affliating with big businesses and from people who pay for the VoIP to landline service.
Also, the way that Skype works is P2P. Any computer using the Skype software (and this is true with many other software like voipbuster) the computer and internet line connected to it will route traffic to and from it to other peoples computers (whether its for you ‘phone call’ or someone elses).
For the provider of Skype, I am unsure at the moment. It wouldn’t be difficult to find (i’d just watch the packets fly). I do know that voipbuster use some huge (3rd party) datacenter in the netherlands though to route the calls, so i’d assume they’d have a similar setup.
