In pleading guilty Wednesday to mail fraud and tax evasion, Michael Kyereme admitted he fraudulently obtained computer parts from Cisco and then resold them.

The 41-year-old Piscataway man faces up to 20 years in federal prison when sentenced in November. He remains free on $500,000 bond. When arrested in March 2007, authorities said Kyereme cheated San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco of more than $10 million, but no figure was specified Wednesday.

Apologies to Harry Potter, but we seem to be on the verge (I mean, just barely at the verge) of developing an invisibility gadget.

Yes, that’s right — invisibility. Like a Klingon Bird of Prey, the effect is the same: to hide the user from sight. While one mostly sees such technology being used for military purposes in books and movies, there are some applications that are grounded in reality. (Really?)

One approach to creating a cloaking device is using something called a superlens, which has what’s called a negative refraction index. This allows it to bend electromagnetic waves back upon themselves, in effect, using interference to render an object invisible.

Yes, indeed! Graeme Milton, of the University of Utah, is working on mathematical models for superlenses. Thus far, the technology is not shaping up to be something that would be feasible for hiding something large, like naval destroyers, but he’s seen it numerically — not in practice, but in a theoretical proof that collections of particles become invisible.

Lots more explaining to do, so read more at DailyTech.

(And thanks to HarryPotterFanClub.com for the image.)

Apple has quietly dropped the price of the high-end MacBook Air by $500.

The Air, which comes with a 1.8GHz upgrade (from 1.6GHz) and a 64GB Solid State Drive (SSD), is now $2,598. Compare this to the original price of the 1.8GHz/SSD MacBook Air at $3,098 just last week.

The difference in price appears to be a combination of price drops in both the processor upgrade ($200 vs. $300) and SSD ($599 vs. $999).

(And maybe it wasn’t selling so good — although I do have a colleague who loves it!)

The base price for the 1.6GHz 80GB MacBook Air remains at $1799.

Apple has emailed customers who have outstanding orders that are affected by the price drop. MacRumors.com has the gist of that correspondence.

Just got this email stating that as of July 7th, AT&T will no longer offer CallVantage through their affiliate channel. To me, this is “codeword” for “we’re no longer promoting CallVantage and expect AT&T to end CallVantage entirely in the near future.” I’ve read about many affiliate programs that when they’re ended, it’s the end of the road for that product. Further, the emails explains, “We ask that you remove all of your promotion of the CallVantage product on/before July 7th and we recommend that you swap out your creative to another of our product offerings such as High Speed DSL or our latest flagship product, UVerse.”

Now tell me that doesn’t hint towards the end of the road for CallVantage. So current CallVantage affiliates are supposed to promote High Speed DSL which has little to do with VoIP phone service? As for UVerse, that has it’s own share of problems. Not to mention UVerse isn’t offered everywhere yet. CallVantage, like Vonage, at least works everywhere there is a broadband connection. This is a sad day for the single-play VoIP broadband providers. If AT&T is jumping ship, what does this bode for Vonage, Packet8, and the other single-play providers?

Now this ‘could’ simply mean AT&T doesn’t want to pay the referral fees from affiiates. But even that doesn’t make sense since affiliates are the CHEAPEST way for broadband VoIP service providers to acquire new customers. Something’s up. I wouldn’t be surprised if AT&T drops CallVantage in 6 months or 12 months from now. My guess is 1 year from now (July 7th, 2009) due to their cancellation terms:

$29.99 disconnect fee applies if service or order for service is canceled or disconnected less than 1 year from the date you placed your order for service and Telephone Adapter (if obtained directly from AT&T without charge) is not returned to and received by AT&T within 16 business days of cancellation or disconnection.

They’ll wait till like June 2009, announce they’re dropping CallVantage, and anyone that jumps ship before the full year is out will have to shell out the $29.99 cancellation fee. Check out the email for yourself…

We want to make you aware that as of July 7th, we will no longer be offering our CallVantage product in our suite of products offered through the affiliate channel.

You will receive commissions on all residual sales that come through during the 60 day referral period that is offered through the program.

We ask that you remove all of your promotion of the CallVantage product on/before July 7th and we recommend that you swap out your creative to another of our product offerings such as High Speed DSL or our latest flagship product, UVerse.

We truly value your partnership and will continue to work with each and every one of you to ensure that we are giving our publishers what they need in order to be successful. Feel free to reach out to the team with any questions, concerns or comments you may have regarding the AT&T Consumer program and enjoy the summer!

Bad news — they sent it out that way.

Good news — they acted really, really fast to stem to damage.

The prospect of VoIP (voice over internet protocol) is immensely enticing and promising for home consumers. In the present day world where saving money is everything, a completely free or low cost phone call through the web is very alluring. The requirement of this system is that home consumers should have VoIP software, microphone and a speaker.

Value added services of VoIP

Needless to say VOIP is a buzz word these days. Every now and then, you would find a group of people talking about the same. It is nothing but just another technological advancement, where you can make phone calls through an IP network at very cheap price. However, the main forte of this system is its value added services which includes voice mails, call forwarding, conference calls and caller ID.

The new model, dubbed PG61, the new plasma resembles a seamless black sheet of glass.
The new Roku box (doesn’t look like much, does it?) lets you stream any of Netflix’s 10,000+ “Watch Now” movies (movies that can be watched immediately over the internet for free with your subscription) to your TV set instantly. However, a new wrinkle may make the device even more attractive — with a simple software download, other services beyond Netflix will soon be able to use it, according to Forbes.

This changes the device from a nice little purchase (it’s only $99), into a potential Trojan horse for digital content in your living room. Of course, it entirely depends on what other services reach agreements to use the device. Roku would only say that other “big name” providers could bring their services to the device with a simple update.

At the same time, Netflix plans to release another box featuring its “Watch Now” service in conjunction with LG later this year. There’s also an intriguing rumor that the service could come to Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

AOL has introduced its newest online gaming site, BigDownload.com, moving to expand its niche audience and boost targeted ad revenue. The addition to AOL’s smaller GameDaily.com is a joint venture with Weblogs, an information-based Internet company.

WIth 700 downloadable files, the site includes 100 full games and 600 teasers, along with game-related news. An additional 50 to 100 new files will be added to the site each month, according to sources

Unlike its main competitor, Yahoo! Games, BigDownload will not require customers go through a registration process before they start downloading gaming content. (Yeah! )

Instead, the site remains fully ad-driven, with advertising customized to individual games and online events. (Boo! ) But somebody has to pay for all of this sometime or other.

And how about that top download!
